A RECORD two-million youth are being targeted in the country to get inspiration from 2012 London Olympics and Paralympics through a programme dubbed International Inspiration.
British High Commissioner to Tanzania, Diane Corner said this on Saturday evening during the launch of the programme at Bunge grounds with hundreds of sporting youths in attendance.
“We want to inspire young people so that they can actively take part in sports and improve their lives,” Ms Corner said at a colourful dinner dance also attended by a handful of legislators.
She said Tanzania is one of the 20 countries taking part in the programme which is part of the London 2012 Olympics and Paralympics bidding team promise to reach out to young people all round the world and connect them to inspirational power of the games so they are inspired to choose sport.
“The vision of the programme in Tanzania is to transform the lives of two million children and young people of all abilities,” Corner pointed out.
The programme which is being undertaken by British Council in partnership with Ministries of Information, Youth, Culture and Sports and Community Development, Gender and Children resolute around four themes.
The themes include: Cost effective in-service training of school teachers and development of material, development of a monitoring and evaluation system incorporating self evaluation, developing teachers' coaching skills, provision of safe spaces and resources and supporting development of young sport leaders.
“We thank the London Olympics bidding team for including Tanzania as one of the 20 countries which is part of the International Inspiration programme because it will benefit our young people,” said Deputy Speaker of parliament, Job Ndugai who was chief guest at the event.
Ndugai said many young people are keen followers of the English Premier League hence bringing the International Inspiration to their backyards is a major step towards encouraging them to succeed.
Minister for Information, Youth, Culture and Sports, Emmanuel Nchimbi pledged government support to the British initiative which he said will help improve sports skills among youths.
International Inspiration is the official international legacy programme for the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games, with a vision of reaching 12 million children in 20 countries through the power of sport.
The London Olympics and Paralympics will be held in Britain at different times next year. Earlier, Bunge football team defeated British Council team by 2-0 in a match played at Jamhuri stadium
